CELEBRITY British royal family

For Meghan Markle the past few months have probably been a whirlwind of new etiquette and experiences. It can't be easy joining one of the most high-profile families in the world.

And yet Meghan Markle has another surprise in store for her...

When she and Prince Harry have children, they probably won't be their legal guardian. Instead, the Queen will have legal custody of the youngest royals.

According to royal expert Marlene Koenig, "the sovereign has legal custody of the minor grandchildren".

This bizarre custom that gives the regent custody of all the royal children dates back to the reign of George I, who fell out with his son, George II. According to some historians, the king felt threatened by his own son's popularity, leading him to eventually banish him from court, though he kept custody of his grandchildren.

The law has remained in place, and means that the Queen technically has custody of Princes George and Louis, as well as their sister, Princess Charlotte.
