Do you have it? - There is no official method for diagnosing a synesthete. However, Richard Cytowic, a neurologist and leading synesthesia researcher, developed some basic guidelines involving synesthetic perceptions.

They're involuntary -

Synesthetes do not actively think about their perceptions—they just happen. They also entail colors being projected.

They're durable and generic -

The perception must be the same every time. For example, if you taste pineapple when you hear Beyoncé, you must always taste pineapple when you hear a Beyoncé song.

They're memorable -

A synesthete who always associates a color with a name will often remember the person's name as the color rather than remembering the actual name.

They can be emotional -

The perceptions may cause emotional reactions such as sadness or anger.

Synesthetes are more likely to work in a creative capacity -

Studies have also shown that everyone is born with synesthesia, but most people lose it at around eight weeks old. Now, for the people who simply never lost it!

Eilish said her brother/producer also has synesthesia, and explained that with everything they make they’re “thinking of what color it is, and what texture it is, and what day of the week it is, and what number it is, and what shape.”

In an interview, the actor said that he remembers learning days of the week and automatically associating colors with them, which is grapheme-color synesthesia. He also experiences spatio-temporal synesthesia where dates have a space in his mind.

Tori Amos -

The singer experiences an unusual type of synesthesia in which sounds produce different images of lights, which she described in her book 'Piece by Piece.' "The song appears as light filament once I've cracked it … similar chord progressions follow similar light patterns."

Pharrell Williams - Williams calls his synesthesia a gift, and says he doesn't know if he would make music without it. He told NPR that he only knows if something is in key or feels right when the colors match in his mind.

Lorde -

In a Tumblr Q&A, the pop star said that if the colors of a song are too oppressive or ugly, she will sometimes stop working on it. 'Tennis Court' was one of those songs: the "worst textured tan color" of the initial version made her feel sick.

Alessia Cara - The young singer told Umusic that she thought everyone had synesthesia because it's how she's always thought about music. "If a certain drum sound sounds purple and the song feels purple, then I know that they kind of match. It just really helps me figure out the whole package of a song," she said.

The famed pianist and bandleader reportedly had chromesthesia, wherein certain notes had certain colors. However, biography 'Sweet Man: The Real Duke Ellington' contends that he would see a different color if the note was played by someone else.

A famed writer of novels, poems, and short stories, Nabokov described in his memoir the different colors of letters, which is the grapheme-color variation of synesthesia. His mother had chromesthesia, in which sounds produce colors or shapes.

Franz Liszt - The renowned pianist and composer would reportedly use his synesthesia to help with his orchestrations, telling the musicians, "O please, gentlemen, a little bluer, if you please! This tone type requires it!"

Arthur Rimbaud -

It's not definitively known whether Rimbaud had synesthesia, but his poem 'Vowels' assigns color values and images to different vowels.

The artist was unfortunately alive in a time where people didn't know much about synesthesia, and he was reportedly kicked out of piano classes in 1885 when his teacher perceived his associations between notes and colors as a sign of insanity.
