Endometriosis is an extremely common illness that has recently become a talking point in the gender equality discussion. The symptoms of the condition are similar to that of a bad period, but exponentially worse. The pain can be extremely debilitating and affect a person's overall mental and physical health. Sadly, a lack of awareness among sufferers and health care professionals has resulted in the normalization of these symptoms, to the degree that many women don't get diagnosed for years. As a result, more and more celebrities are using their platforms to raise awareness about this highly prevalent but sadly neglected condition.

Australian conservationist Bindi Irwin revealed on March 8, International Women's Day, that she has had a decade-long battle with endometriosis and decided to share her story "for other women who need help." Alongside a photo of herself in a hospital bed, Irwin wrote, "For 10 years I’ve struggled with insurmountable fatigue, pain & nausea. Trying to remain a positive person & hide the pain has been a very long road."

"A doctor told me it was simply something you deal with as a woman & I gave up entirely, trying to function through the pain." She revealed that she underwent surgery after doctors found 37 lesions, and thanked the doctors and nurses who believed her pain. Irwin added, "Things may look fine on the outside looking in through the window of someone’s life, however, that is not always the case. Please be gentle & pause before asking me (or any woman) when we’ll be having more children."

She concluded her post, which coincided with both International Women’s Day and Endometriosis Awareness Month: "I’m aware of millions of women struggling with a similar story. There’s stigma around this awful disease. I’m sharing my story for anyone who reads this & is quietly dealing with pain & no answers. Let this be your validation that your pain is real & you deserve help. Keep searching for answers."
