FASHION Ethics

Five years ago the Rana Plaza factory collapse took the lives of over 1,000 people and exposed the reality of fashion workers’ conditions worldwide. So how far have we come since then? A new study shows that the world of fashion still isn’t safe and ethical enough. The Fashion Revolution Week has returned for its fifth year, along with the Fashion Transparency Index.

The index reviewed 150 of fashion’s biggest brands in areas including commitments, governance, and traceability. The study found how open fashion brands were about their suppliers, as well as their environmental impact.

The North Face was named as the most-improved brand. But as Dazed reports, brands are tight-lipped about their treatment of garment workers, particularly women. No brands scored more than 60% on the index’s ranking system. The index also let buyers know how to improve ethics in fashion. Supporters are encouraged to ask brands “#whomademyclothes” directly on social media. For more information, head over to Fashion Revolution>
