Kava is a drink that originated in Fiji that has stress-relieving and soothing properties. People who want to drink less alcohol or avoid hangovers are opting to drink kava instead of their usual cocktails.
It is made from the ground root of the kava plant, also known by the Latin name Piper Methysticum, which roughly translates to "intoxicating pepper." The kava drink is prepared by taking the powdered root and soaking it in water. The result is a murky brown-colored liquid with an earthy aroma and taste.
Kava is historically used in a nightly ritual done by people in the South Pacific, and has often been used to reduce conflict. It entered Western culture in the 1990s, and as of 2017 there are over 100 kava bars in the US.
According to NowThis, several studies have found that kava root could be used to treat insomnia, anxiety, and other nervous disorders.
Next time you're going for a drink with friends, mellow out with a glass of kava.
