FOOD Fruit

A substantial reason people tend to avoid filling their refrigerators up with produce boils down to one primary factor—cost. Why would you get 6 apples for $10 when you could get 15 doughnuts for the same price?

According to Vox, fresh fruits and vegetables are often more expensive to farm than other types of crops that end up in processed foods. One primary example of this can be seen in strawberries. The fruits that are meant for whole consumption have to be picked by hand, while those that are destined to be an ingredient in a processed food can be pulled by a machine. The increased labor directly results in increased cost.

So what can be done about these costly crops? In the United States, nonprofit organizations are working to make it easier for low-income families to afford fruit and vegetables. The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, for example, allows doctors to give out $1 vouchers for natural produce. Other solutions could include community gardens, increased nutrition teaching, and healthier school lunches.
