A new strain of mpox, the virus formerly known as monkeypox, has been detected in England, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The case was identified in a person who had recently traveled to Asia, with officials confirming the discovery of a “new recombinant mpox virus” containing genetic material from different strains.
Dr. Katy Sinka, head of sexually transmitted infections at UKHSA, emphasized that genomic testing was key to detecting the new strain and understanding how mpox is changing. She noted that, while many cases are mild, the infection can be severe in some individuals. Sinka urged eligible people to get vaccinated, stressing that immunization remains a proven and effective way to protect against serious illness.
Mpox is spread through close contact, including sexual activity, as well as via coughs and sneezes, and typically causes flu-like symptoms such as chills, muscle aches, and exhaustion, followed by a rash that can develop into blisters. Experts say the finding highlights how the virus continues to circulate globally and evolve.
The World Health Organization has declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency worldwide. Until very recently, the mpox virus had not been seen outside of West and Central Africa for years, but since May 2022 it has spread to various other continents.
