In early 2024, the United States confirmed its first cases of bird flu in cows, raising concerns about dairy and milk consumption. Now, the country has reported its first human death from bird flu, a significant turning point as more than 67 cases have been recorded nationwide.
The Louisiana Department of Health reported that the patient, over 65 with existing health issues, had been exposed to a mix of backyard poultry and wild birds. This was the country’s first severe human case of H5N1 bird flu.
Since 2024, 10 states have reported cases of bird flu. Most patients infected fell ill after exposure to infected cattle or poultry, while the Louisiana patient was the first case connected to contact with a backyard flock. Still, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the risk to public health is low, and there is no evidence that the virus is spreading from person to person.
Nonetheless, scientists are worried that the growing number of transmissions could cause the virus to mutate, enabling humans to pass it on from one to another. Click through to find out more about the ongoing bird flu outbreak, and its potential implications.
