LIFESTYLE Queen

Jetsun Pema is the queen of Bhutan, a country in south Asia. Currently 27 years old, Pema took the throne at 21 and is the youngest queen in the world.

Not your average queen, Pema is breaking down stereotypes in the region and is involved with a range of environmental, economic, and humanitarian issues. She is working to create conservation projects and install public care facilities for disabled people.

Before marrying the King of Bhutan, Pema went to college in London and studied psychology, international relations, and art history.

"She is a wonderful human being, very intelligent. She and I share one big thing in common: a love and passion for art," King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, her husband, said of her after their wedding, according to NowThis.

While it is common practice for a queen to walk behind her husband, the modern royal couple breaks this tired stereotype by walking beside each other hand in hand.

Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan is a leading global icon.
