Alabama - Alabama is relatively laid back when it comes to baby names. First and last names can be anything the parent chooses. Apostrophes and hyphens are allowed but numbers and symbols aren’t.

Alaska - Head to Alaska if you want to name your baby Chloë or Beyoncé! Names with umlauts, tildes, and many other (but not all) foreign characters are allowed.

Arizona - Arizona has a limit on name length—a 141 character limit to be exact. 45 for the first name, 45 for middle, 45 for last, and 6 for a suffix.

Arkansas - If you wanted to name your child, Baby, Babyboy, Babygirl, Baby Boy, Baby Girl, Infant, Test, Unk or Void in Arkansas, think again!

California - Derogatory or obscene names are specifically banned in California.

Colorado - Interestingly, Colorado does not have a limit on the length of a name. However you must be able to spell it using a standard keyboard.

Connecticut - The law about baby names in Connecticut  states that any name is allowed as long as it is “not for fraudulent or nefarious purposes and does not infringe on the rights of another person.”

Florida - In Florida, if both parents cannot agree on a first name at the time of birth, the birth certificate can be left blank until both parents agree or a court selects a name.

Hawaii - There are no limitations for baby names in Hawaii.

Idaho - Only letters are allowed in Idaho names.

Illinois - Illinois is very lenient when it comes to baby names. They even allow unique names such as "1Der” or “2-Riffic.”

Indiana - There are no limitations for first names in Indiana, however, if a mother is unmarried her baby must take her surname, unless there’s an affidavit proving paternity.

Kansas - Kansas laws explicitly require that all babies be given a last name.

Louisiana - In Louisiana, if a mother has not been married within 300 days of the birth, her baby’s last name must match hers. If a mother is married, the baby’s last name must be the same as her husband's, unless both of the parents agree to change it.

Massachusetts - Massachusetts only allows names with letters found on the standard English keyboard.

Michigan - Michigan also outlaws symbols and allows spelling with English letters only.

Minnesota - Minnesota law states that each name—first, middle and last—must be limited to 50 letters each, allowing for a maximum length of 150 characters.

Mississippi - In Mississippi, if parents would like to choose a different surname than the father's, the request must be verified and witnessed by a hospital representative.

Montana - Montana does not have specific laws about baby names, though their data system does not recognize symbols. If parents would like to use a symbol, once they receive the birth certificate, they can write it in and send it back to the vital records office for approval.

Nebraska - Nebraska law mandates that parents cannot choose names that imply objectionable or obscene words. Abbreviations are also not allowed.

New Hampshire - New Hampshire decrees that a child's first, middle, and last names must be less than 100 characters total.

New Jersey - Numbers and symbols are prohibited for baby names in New Jersey.

New Mexico - New Mexico law states that accents, special characters, and Baby Boy, Baby Girl, Male, and Female are all banned names.

Tennessee - The state law is silent when it comes to first names, however, in Tennessee there is a range of distinctions when it comes to surnames.

Texas - Special characters, numbers, and accents are not allowed in Texas baby names. A parent can name their child John Smith III, but not John Smith 3rd.

Utah - The Utah state law reads that using symbols "would make applying for and receiving a birth certificate more laborious.”

Vermont - In Vermont, the baby name legislation states, “You may use trademarked names, diseases, and obscenities, but we highly recommend against it.”
