The prize - The Man Booker Prize for Fiction was first awarded in 1969. It is open to writers of any nationality whose writing is in English and published in the UK and Ireland. This is the first year that novels published in Ireland are eligible. The winner receives £50,000, but the prestige of winning or even being longlisted for the award is regarded as a prize in itself.

The judges - This year’s longlist was selected by a panel of five judges: philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah, writer Val McDermid, cultural critic Leo Robson, writer and critic Jacqueline Rose, and artist and graphic novelist Leanne Shapton.

Anna Burns - The author of 'Milkman' was born in Belfast. She is the author of two earlier novels and now lives in East Sussex. Burns won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize in 2001 and was shortlisted for the 2002 Orange Prize for Fiction.
