The familiar scenario: You wake up with a huge hangover. Fragments of last night flashing through your mind. Feelings of guilt and shame make you feel even more nauseous than your own breath. Did you really say these things? Well, you were drunk, and we all know that makes you say things you don’t really mean, right?

We all try to hide behind our drunk alter ego, but what if that is the real you? Science has revealed that alcohol doesn't necessarily change our personality. Researchers compared how drunk people see themselves when they are drunk and how sober people look at them. It seems that either drunk or sober we are all the same.

Candidates that consumed alcohol gave their personality a lower rate when it comes to consciousness, openness and agreeableness. They ranked themselves higher on levels of extraversion and emotional stability. The sober people only saw a difference in extraversion.

According to Rachel Winograd, an assistant research professor at the University of Missouri in St Louis, the real you is the one you are every day. We show different aspects of our personality in different situations. We all know we act differently when we are having a girls night with our best friend than when having a cup of tea with our mother in law.

Rachel says that your drunk alter ego is another side of your personality.  “The intoxicated you is just a side of you. The you that’s on top of everything, that’s eating healthily, that’s keeping everything together — that’s the real you. Give yourself some credit.”

Well that's good news, isn't it?
