The documentary, 'The Mask You Live In' explores how masculinity is defined in America. By following a group of boys and young men, they show the trials and tribulations of keeping a stereotypically manly facade.
From a young age, males are pressured by the media, their fellow students, and even adult role models to "be a man." The subjects of the film discuss what it means to repress emotions, sexualize women, and resolve conflicts with violence.
The website explains how, "These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become 'real' men."
'The Mask You Live In' is the sequel to 'Miss Representation,' a documentary that tackled similar subjects for young women. These films were created by The Representation Project, a nonprofit organization that uses media as a catalyst for cultural transformation.
Both documentaries are available for streaming on Netflix.
