How do actors pick their films? It's easy for big stars like Brad Pitt, who give out one Oscar-worthy performance every year. But in the case of smaller names in Hollywood, beggars can't be choosers. Some of the biggest stars started off with small-time roles in small-budget movies. Take Matthew McConaughey, who was cameoing in films like 'Angels in the Outfield' and 'Dazed and Confused,' before his McConaissance. Many actors have roles they'd rather forget, which make them all the more interesting for us film fans.

Then again, how many films are saved by its performances? Historical biopic 'J. Edgar' wasn't a critical triumph, but Leonardo DiCaprio's performance was a watermark, and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. You may have completely forgotten about 'Cake,' a drama film from 2014, but Jennifer Aniston's performance still stands out as one of her best. Yet sometimes actors just aren't enough to keep us entertained. 'The Big Wedding' should've been a smash, with an ensemble cast featuring Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams. The comedy wasn't a commercial hit however, and critics weren't happy either. It sits at a 7% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a website that finds an average score from critics around the world.

But the film flops of the famous should not be forgotten, but celebrated. There's an odd beauty in seeing stars we love in stories we hate. George Clooney in 'Batman & Robin' could be studied in acting school, while Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Prince of Persia' is a joyous case of what could be. And looking back, how was Natalie Portman cast in medieval stoner comedy, 'Your Highness'?

Recently, Sophie Turner has felt the heat for her role in 'Dark Phoenix.' The actress stars as Jean Grey, a powerful mutant with god-like abilities. Recent 'X-Men' films have been highly rated, but 'Dark Phoenix' is a critical flop. Critic site Roger Ebert rated it 1.5 out of 4, while Rotten Tomatoes has the film at a 22% rating. Fans aren't too happy either, rating the film 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb. Click on to see what's wrong with 'Dark Phoenix,' and to discover the other flops from famous Hollywood stars.
