Scottish rap group Young Fathers have shared a new single. ‘Toy’ is the third teaser from their third album, ‘Cocoa Sugar’, due March 9. The song is a manic effort from the Mercury Prize-winning group. There’s haywire synth sounds, bouncing beats, and taunting lyrics like “chasing shadows in the gallows”. The song is a welcome step back into the hip-hop genre. The Fathers have been experimenting with previous singles ‘Lord’ and ‘In My View’. The former is a futuristic piano ballad, featuring distorted bass and a gospel choir. ‘In My View’, however, is a single you can dance to, with an emotional chorus and fast-flowing verses.
The band's last LP, ‘White Men Are Black Men Too’, came out in 2015. Their debut album ‘Dead’ won the Mercury Prize in 2014, beating out competition from Damon Albarn, FKA Twigs, and Bombay Bicycle Club. Last year the band appeared on the ‘T2 Trainspotting’ soundtrack.
