A festival in northern France has defended booking a musician with a deadly past. Papillons de Nuit festival booked Bertrand Cantat, the former frontman of rock band Noir Désir, to perform this year. Cantat killed his girlfriend Marie Trintignant in 2003 during a tour. She suffered severe brain damage following a fight in a hotel room. Cantat was sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime, eventually only serving four years and being released on parole. An online petition protesting the booking has gained support from over 65,000 people.

However, the festival has defended the musician and refuse to cancel his scheduled performance. In a statement obtained by NME, the organisers stated that “we consider that our only criteria should be artistic”. The petition counters by saying “by inviting Bertrand Cantat, you condone domestic violence and violence against women”.

Papillons de Nuit festival will take place from May 18 to 20 in Normandy.
