Tina Tchen, the founder of Time’s Up, will lead a task force against gender bias within the music industry. Tchen will work with the Recording Academy, known as the party behind the annual Grammy Awards. Academy president Neil Portnow sung Tchen’s praises in statements obtained by NME. “Tina Tchen is an accomplished advocate for women and impact-oriented leader”, Portnow said, adding that “the fact that she lacks business ties to the music industry ensures her objectivity as chair”.

Tchen is an American lawyer who advises companies on sexual harassment as well as diversity and gender equality. She previously worked as an assistant to President Barack Obama from 2011 until 2017. Portnow and the Grammy Awards were criticised this year over gender bias. As Pitchfork pointed out, only 17% of award winners were women. Album of the Year nominee Lorde was also denied a live performance, whereas her male co-nominees were all given opportunities. Portnow’s responded by asking female artists to “step up”, which led to female music executives writing an open letter calling for his resignation>
