Former Las Vegas Raiders star wide receiver Henry Ruggs III—the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft—was involved in a serious car accident in Las Vegas in the early hours of November 2, 2021, which left a 23-year-old woman and her dog dead. According to TMZ, the then 22-year-old athlete was traveling at "a high rate of speed" with twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system before he veered into the right lane of a three-lane road and slammed into the back of a Toyota, which trapped the other driver in her seat so she was unable to escape as flames engulfed her car. Ruggs, who had non-life-threatening injuries, was released from the Raiders and hit with two felony charges.

On May 2 it was announced that Ruggs will plead guilty to a felony count of DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor manslaughter, which will carry a sentence of three to 10 years in prison, his attorneys said, per NBC.  The attorneys added that it was the “first step toward a fair resolution to this matter and we look forward to closure for all the parties involved.”
