While traveling abroad you expand your views, indulge in delicacies, and learn about the rich history of the land. Growing up you probably read about divisive battles and momentous dates in history books, but likely never expected to see these locations in person. Take a historical vacation to these top ancient locations:

1. Biarritz, France
This bath city was famed for attracting royals. The exquisite Hôtel du Palais was built for Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie, and a trip here will undoubtedly have you feeling like a queen.

2. Bologna, Italy
This well-preserved city has been a hub for progressive thinking and renowned art. The Le Due Torri is a beautiful tower in the middle of the city that was said to be the primary inspiration for the World Trade Center in New York.

3. Bordeaux, France
Skip Paris and head to Bordeaux for artifacts of the Roman Empire and ornate Gothic architecture. The premiere Musée des Beaux-Arts displays the work of Picasso, Rubens, and Matisse.

4. Cologne, Germany
This medieval city was a dominant power during the Frankish Empire. Head to the stunning Cologne Cathedral to visit the relics of the Shrine of the Three Kings. The real bones of the biblical Wise Men are preserved here.
