Nationwide’s advert series ‘Flo and Joan’ features two singers, played by Nicola and Rosie Dempsey, who sing different comedic songs. The adverts have been divisive, with social media filled with opinions on both sides. However, the response has been taken to new extremes. Nationwide noted that the sisters have received online death threats. As reported NME, Nationwide said "It’s one thing not to like an advert, another to threaten to kill the stars of it. Abuse is abuse and that’s never OK in our book”.
The bank has teamed up with Met Police for an investigation into the death threats. Sara Bennison, Nationwide’s Chief Marketing Officer, said trolls “have chosen to post the most vile, abusive and misogynistic comments about the duo”. Bennison added that Flo and Joan aren’t the only targets, “our adverts that feature people of different colours, backgrounds and perceived sexuality attract the most criticism”.
