James Ivory made history on Oscar night. At 89 years old, the writer and filmmaker became the oldest ever Oscar winner. He accepted the award for best adapted screenplay for ‘Call Me By Your Name’. It’s been a long road for Ivory, who began work on the film over 10 years ago. It was worth the wait, with fans and critics praising both the direction and lead stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet.
On Oscar night, Ivory paid homage to lead star Chalamet. He wore a striking shirt with the actor’s face painted on it. Critics called it “iconic” and the “best part of the Oscars red carpet”, as reported by BBC News. Andrew Mania, the British artist behind the shirt, recently talked to the BBC about the piece’s importance. “All of the attention since the Oscars has been overwhelming… I feel like a rabbit in the headlights”, he said. The Bristol artist hand-painted the shirt. Unfortunately for fans, it’s a one-off custom shirt made especially for Ivory. “It’s quite a brave thing to wear something so different - especially to the Oscars”, Mania told BBC News.
