When a shirt at Forever 21 costs $3, someone is getting shortchanged. For years the price of garments has gone down significantly in chain retail stores, while the humanitarian and environmental costs have increased dramatically. The scale on which the world of fashion balances has tipped over, and the result is anything but glamorous.
Directed by Andrew Morgan, the Netflix Documentary, 'The True Cost,' examines how the mix of consumerism and mass media work to turn a blind eye to an evil industry.
"I grew up in a world of fast fashion. Some of the major brands and outlets have been a part of the way I buy clothing since I was a little kid," Morgan said in a video about the film. "I never really stopped to think about where the clothes came from, or where they went after they were with me, or at all who was making them and how those people's lives were affected." Through creating this documentary, Morgan hopes to unveil some truth on a subject that too often goes without discussion.
The film travels around the world, interviewing huge fashion icons, learning from environmentalists, questioning factory owners, and giving a voice to garment workers. From runways to slums, this project unraveled the truth about the clothing industry.
