Following the Raptors' 114-106 win over the Washington Wizards in a playoff game, the Toronto team was joined by Drake, their Global Ambassador and honourary team member, in the locker room.
The Toronto rapper has a regular court-side residency at Air Canada Centre games, but this time, instead of Raptors apparel, he donned a Humboldt Broncos jersey.
The Raptors released a short one-minute video in which, after the team marks their win, Drake interrupts their applause.
"You guys know the story," he says in a sombre tone as he takes off the green and yellow jersey, "but these kids unfortunately, um, there's lot of families suffering from this bus crash, so if you could all just sign this—"
The rest of his words are lost in a wave of eager affirmations and supportive applause. The video shows coach Dwane Casey and various team members including Fred VanVleet, DeMar DeRozan, and Kyle Lowry signing the Broncos jersey. The Broncos were on their way to a playoff game when their bus collided with a a semi, leaving 16 dead.
According to The Star, the senior director of communications at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has confirmed that plans are being finalized for the jersey. Based off of the incredible nation-wide response to the tragedy, the jersey will likely be added to the long list of Canadian efforts in support of their fellow citizens in pain.
