Ikea has recently become an unexpected force in fashion. Last year, Balenciaga caused a stir when it included Ikea-inspired bags in its Spring/Summer show. Revered designer Virgil Abloh has revealed his collaboration with the brand. Abloh released the collection in a distinctly modern way, via livestream on YouTube. The collection features both furniture and accessories, as well Abloh’s own spin on the Ikea bag.
The designer offered key commentary on the livestream, explaining his inspirations and methods. “I’m trying to embed an artistic quality in things that you already have”, he said, via Dazed. “So the chair is elevated because it feels more like an art object than a typical chair that serves its function with four equal legs”. Abloh even encouraged viewers to leave comments on the stream. That way, he could make amendments before the prototypes are revealed in June. Abloh will also host his first Louis Vuitton show in June, making it a big month for the pioneering creative.
