Styles wore a stunning brown Gucci pantsuit to the Brit Awards in 2021, stealing the limelight with his incredible fashion sense as usual. Later, Jennifer Aniston wore the same suit for a photo shoot with InStyle magazine. Once fans pointed out their fashion synchronicity, Aniston posted side-by-side photos of them and said "Just call me Harriet Styles." That wasn't the first time that this pair have accidentally matched up either, Styles once wore a graphic tee with the words "Save the drama for your mama." Aniston's character wore the same t-shirt in season 10 of 'Friends.'
A day after Dua Lipa wore this strappy Versace look to the 2022 Grammys, supermodel Cindy Crawford posted a photo of herself wearing the same dress back in 1992 to the MTV Video Music Awards, along with a photo of the singer, and wrote, "Then and now," with a heart, calling the look "Timeless."
Anna Nicole Smith's daughter Dannielynn Birkhead got the chance to wear one of Janet Jackson’s iconic outfits. The teen attended the Barnstable Brown Gala in the very same black pantsuit, oversize belt, and newsboy cap that Janet had worn to the same pre-Kentucky Derby event nearly two decades ago, back in 2003. Dannielynn's father, Larry Birkhead, explained that "It was purchased as a part of Janet's Julien's auctions benefitting charity," in an Instagram post. The father-daughter duo even got to meet and snap a photo with the legendary singer at the gala.
“What a night! … Janet was so gracious and complimentary of Dannielynn in her outfit,” Larry wrote in a subsequent post. “She made Dannielynn so happy and even graciously posed for a photo with us." He added that he plans to take his daughter to her first Janet Jackson concert soon.
The 15th Annual Academy of Country Music Honors was held in Nashville on August 25 2022. Country music legend Shania Twain was shocked on the red carpet when she saw that up-and-comer Kelsea Ballerini was wearing her iconic white gown from the 1999 Grammys. That was the year that Twain took home two awards, and the dress was put in the Grammy Hall of Fame museum. "It was an incredible night for me at the GRAMMYs. That dress represented that experience, so I'm just happy to see it alive again," Twain told ET. "She looks stunning. She looks like an absolute angel. It's very flattering to see her in the dress, and that she even wanted to wear it. I said, 'I hope it's not too dusty after being in the [museum].'"
Ballerini reportedly saw the opportunity to wear the white gown as a way to pay tribute to Twain. "When I was asked to be a part of it, to honor her, we were just thinking about every possible way that we can highlight every stage of her career," she explained. Ballerini performed at the awards and also recreated the all-black outfit Twain wore when she performed at the 1999 Grammys.
With a legacy that large, not everyone was pleased to see the dress on the reality TV star, particularly the legendary dress' designer Bob Mackie. The 82-year-old costume designer, who drew the design in 1962 for Jean Louis, told Entertainment Weekly of Kim's rewear, "I thought it was a big mistake," in a story published May 16. "[Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her," he argued. "Nobody else should be seen in that dress." The controversy continued, with reports that the dress was damaged following Kim K's use, with signs of stretched fabric and missing crystals.
When it came to Lil Nas X's stunning outfit at the 2022 MTV VMAs, Iman wanted people to know she did it first. The supermodel shared a photo of herself on Instagram at the 2021 Met Gala in a gold and white dramatic feathered Harris Reed design featuring a hoop skirt and headpiece, paired with a photo of the 'Industry Baby' singer wearing his black version of the look. Iman wrote in the caption, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Congrats to @harris_reed @lilnasx @vmas 2022."
Dressing Lil Nas X was particularly special for Reed, though, as the designer shared on Instagram that it was an "honor" to dress a "true queer icon," adding that Lil Nas is someone he looks up to for "being brave, daring, loud and different."
Though the Met Gala is all about pulling different looks, a little overlap happened when Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang wore the same dress to the annual event, though they did at least wear different colors of the high-collared dress with cut-outs. The 'Don't Worry Darling' director wore a white and gold version, while the Vogue China editor-in-chief wore the look in black and gold with a fuller skirt, train, and gold detailing on the hem.
At the 2022 Met Gala, Kim Kardashian wore the same dress Marilyn Monroe famously donned to serenade President John F. Kennedy for his 45th birthday in 1962. When Monroe originally peeled off her white fur coat to reveal the sparkling translucent look adorned with over six thousand crystals, it was a shocking moment. According to Vogue, Monroe reportedly paid Jean-Louis US$1,440 for the custom piece, which was first sold at Christie's auction in 1999 for over a million dollars, then sold for a whopping US$4.8 million at Julien’s Auctions in 2016, and was later acquired by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, who lent it to Kim. To this day, it holds the record for being the most expensive dress sold at auction.
