Always a popular summer destination for Alpine hiking, Zermatt can also be explored on foot in winter. In fact, it's the most famous mountain climbing village in the region.

One of these runs takes in the Breithorn Plateau, which is also a favorite location for hikers and climbers

This is the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Spanning 494 m (1,621 ft) and running 85 m (279 ft) above the ground at its highest point, the bridge is part of a hiking path between Zermatt and Grächen.

Back in the village and worth a diversion for its glittering 18th-century altar, Zermatt's main church building in fact dates from much later, having been rebuilt in 1913.

Similarly, overlooking Zermatt is Klein Matterhorn ("Little Matterhorn"). Make sure you take the aerial tramway for a dizzy flight to the top.

Catch up on a bit of history by taking time out to browse this engaging cultural attraction, whose main theme is the Matterhorn. Much of the museum is set underground where a complete mountain village has been recreated.

No cars are allowed in Zermatt, which makes walking and window shopping a real pleasure. And the après-ski scene is as lively as it gets!

Take a train from Zermatt to the summit of the Gornergrat, where the Kulm Hotel is situated.

You can't visit Zermatt without noticing a certain snow-flecked peak. Its iconic form makes the Matterhorn one of the most photographed mountains in the world. Its summit peaks at 4,478 m (14,692 ft).

During your stay you might bump into Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA fame, who resides in Zermatt. The village often glows in the celebrity limelight, attracting A-listers to its pristine ski slopes.
