In this gallery, we take a look back at some of the events from 1970. It was a very different time, naturally. The Vietnam War was still going on, and being heavily protested. Many countries were declaring independence from their previous colonial regimes, and musicians like Jimi Hendrix were rocking out in the biggest concerts ever seen.

▲January - Pan American Airways make commercial Boeing 747 flights available, going from New York's JFK airport to London Heathrow.

▲January - Diana Ross and the Supremes perform together for the last time in Las Vegas, Nevada.

▲January - Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones is fined by a London court for possession of cannabis.

▲February - The Chicago Seven are found not guilty of conspiring to incite a riot. The charges related to events at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

▲March - The French submarine Eurydice explodes in the Mediterranean Sea during a practice dive. There are no survivors.

▲March - Rhodesia (now known as Zimbabwe) is declared a republic after becoming completely independent from the UK.

▲March - The 1970 World's Fair is held in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Seventy-eight countries participated and over 64 million people attended.

▲March - A two-week strike by mail sorters and carriers in New York City leads to widespread disruption across the country.

▲March - The leaders of East and West Germany meet to normalize relations. This was the first time since the country was divided into separate republics.

▲April - When the US decides to invade Cambodia to destroy the Viet Cong, many protests occur throughout the country.

▲May - The Beatles release what is to be their 12th and final album, 'Let it be.'

▲May - In the USSR, scientific drilling commences of the Kola Superdeep Borehole.

▲May - The Ancash earthquake occurs in Peru. It has a huge death toll of nearly 70,000 people, and 50,000 are injured.

▲June - The Soyuz 9 embarks from the USSR on a flight through space that lasts for more than 17 days.

▲June - Tonga becomes independent from the UK, and subsequently joins the Commonwealth.

▲June - Brazil defeats Italy 4-1 in the final of the 1970 FIFA World Cup. This was Brazil's third time as winners.

▲July - The Aswan High Dam is finally completed in Egypt. Made of rock and clay, the dam was worked on by thousands of Egyptian engineers and workers.

▲July - Said bin Taimur is deposed in Oman by his son Qaboos bin Said Al Said, with the assistance of the UK government. He was exiled to the UK.

▲August - The largest rock festival of all time commences, and over 600,000 attend. The line-up includes The Doors, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix.

▲August - The Women's Strike for Equality takes place in New York City. Around 50,000 attended, making it the largest protest to date for women at the time.

▲September - Operation Jefferson Glenn commences. A new joint military operation begins in the Thừa Thiên province.

▲September - The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hijack several aircraft, which are then forced to land in Dawson's Field, Jordan.

September - Jimi Hendrix dies aged 27 from asphyxiation after being intoxicated with barbiturates.

▲October - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is declared the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was highly critical of the Soviet Union.

▲October - Salvador Allende is elected in Chile. He is the first Marxist to be elected as the country's president.

▲November - Leaders from each of the six European Economic Community nations meet in Munich, Germany, to begin the European Political Cooperation.

▲November - Women's Liberation protesters disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty pageant, which was held at the Royal Albert Hall, in London.

▲December - The Environmental Protection Agency is established in the US. Its job is to maintain and enforce national environmental laws.

December - Paul McCartney files a lawsuit against his former Beatles bandmates and Apple Corps. to have the band legally dissolved.
