An ex-girlfriend of Cobain’s has said he was severely self-conscious about his small frame. He weighed about 120 lbs (54 kg) and couldn’t put on weight. In an attempt to hide his thinness, he started wearing layer upon layer, even in warm weather.

Maybe this is not so surprising considering the cover of the band’s third and final album is titled ‘In Utero,’ and depicts an anatomical figure of a woman. Cobain said he kept fetuses at home, though no one knows for sure whether he meant actual fetuses or just model figures.

Following the success of the band’s performance at MTV Unplugged, Cobain said the band’s next album would be more acoustic and ethereal, and would include a collaboration with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe.

▲In July 1993, Cobain had an accidental heroin overdose the same day he was scheduled to play at the New Music Seminar in New York City. Courtney Love reportedly resuscitated him with Narcan, and he performed as if nothing had happened.
