The Kardashians may have started out as reality stars, but there is no denying that they are now fashion icons, firmly shaping the fashion industry.
Before the sisters collaborated with world-famous designers, they opened a simple boutique called DASH. Now, they can be seen on the catwalk at Paris fashion week or on the red carpet at the MET Gala, and one of the women on the Blue Origin spacecraft even wore SKIMS underwear!
So, how did Kardashian fashion launch itself quite literally into space? From SKIMS to Good American, and all things Kylie Jenner, click on to find out.
When the Kardashians first became a household name, it was through their reality TV show, ´Keeping Up With the Kardashians,' and they most certainly did not dress like they do now! However, they have since transcended into the fashion industry with their own lines and influential looks.
Their red carpet looks inspire fashion trends, and their MET gala outfits have become one of the highlights of the event. From Kim wearing a vintage Marilyn Monroe gown to Kylie in a custom Jean Paul Gaultier, they always steal the show.
The Kardashian-Jenner sisters also have a massive collective following on Instagram, totaling over 1.2 billion across their accounts. Kylie takes the lead with 396.7 million followers, all of whom see and are influenced by her fashion choices. So, how did it all begin?
Before the sisters collaborated with top designers, they started by opening their own store. DASH was a women's boutique founded by Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian in 2006.
With locations in Los Angeles, New York City, and Miami, it became so successful that it even had a spin-off reality show called ‘Dash Dolls’ which followed the employees of the stores. DASH closed in 2018 after 11 years of operation.
In 2011, they also launched The Kardashian Kollection, a global lifestyle brand which started with clothes and accessories, and branched out to homewear and a Kardashian Kids line. But the girls had much bigger things to come.
SKIMS is undoubtedly the most famous and successful fashion line to come from the Kardashian family. It was established by Kim along with Emma and Jens Grede in 2019 and has seen untold success ever since.
When the brand was originally launched, it was called Kimono, in reference to the traditional Japanese robe. However, the brand faced criticism for cultural appropriation and was renamed SKIMS.
The new name, SKIMS, was chosen to reflect the idea that the garments are like a second skin. Offered in a vast range of shades to match different skin tones, they are designed to quite literally skim the body.
SKIMS was originally a shapewear brand, selling the idea that by wearing their products, you could achieve the same famous shape as the Kardashians themselves. However, the brand soon expanded into loungewear, lingerie, accessories, and menswear.
The Kardashians have faced backlash over the years for promoting unrealistic and often unhealthy body image ideals. SKIMS, however, has been praised for its inclusive sizing, offering a wide range from XXS to 5XL, living up to its tagline, "Solutions for Everyone."
The company has collaborated with major brands, including a limited collection with Fendi in 2021, a very sparkly collection with Swarovski in 2023, and most notably, with Dolce & Gabbana in 2024.
As well as designer collabs, SKIMS also partnered with Team USA for the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2021, providing the athletes with loungewear and undergarments. They also became the official underwear partner of the NBA, WNBA, and USA Basketball in 2023.
In 2025, SKIMS reached new heights when it launched into space with Blue Origin on the all-female spaceflight. The crew of six women included Katy Perry, Gayle King, and Lauren Sánchez, who proudly declared that she would be wearing SKIMS underwear onboard!
SKIMS is now valued at over US$4 billion, which firmly solidifies its place in the fashion industry. This has been acquired mainly through online sales, however, there are also a few physical stores and retailers.
Kim may have made a chunk of her billions through SKIMS, but she has also made a fair amount through her other lines, including cosmetics brand KKW Beauty, fragrance line KKW Fragrance, and skincare brand SKKN BY KIM.
As a result of these brands, along with the show and various business ventures, Kim is the first billionaire in the family with an estimated net worth of US$1.7 billion. She could probably buy a lot of shapewear with that!
One of the next most successful fashion ventures from the Kardashian clan is Good America, a clothing brand founded by Khloé Kardashian and Emma Grede. With a strong focus on denim, it also offers swimwear and shoes.
The Kardashians' bodies have been a thing of fascination in the media for years, and Khloé in particular received a lot of hate. As a result, she went on a huge fitness campaign and, in true Kardashian style, found a way to brand it.
As well as branching into activewear, Khloé also released workout videos and a New York Times bestselling book called 'Strong Looks Better Naked,' which focused on fitness, wellness, and self-confidence.
Kylie Jenner was famously declared a billionaire by Forbes in 2019, however, her net worth has since been adjusted to US$710 million. She built up this (almost) billionaire status through a range of lines, including her fashion brand, Khy.
Kylie launched Khy in November 2023. Focusing on everyday wear, the concept is high quality at affordable prices (depending on what your budget is!). The brand also released several limited-edition collections with global designers.
As successful as Khy is, Kylie’s big money-making brand has been Kylie Cosmetics. The makeup brand is particularly famous for its lip kits and is now valued at approximately US$710 million.
Kylie also boasts a swimwear brand called Kylie Swim, a skincare brand called Kylie Skin, and a baby care brand called, you guessed it, Kylie Baby. So, it’s safe to say that at this point, Kylie literally is the brand.
Kendall Jenner began modelling at the age of 14 and is now a supermodel staple at Paris (and every other) fashion week. During her career, she has worked with fashion designers including Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Chanel, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana, and Balmain.
Despite being one of the highest-paid models in the world, Kendall is one of the only sisters not to have launched a fashion line. She has, however, got her own premium tequila brand called 818 Tequila.
The oldest Kardashian, Kourtney, has done a partnership with online fashion brand boohoo, and her wedding to Travis Barker was famously hosted and designed by Dolce and Gabbana
Otherwise, she has stayed away from the fashion industry, instead focusing on health and wellness. She started with her lifestyle brand, Poosh, and then branched into vitamin and supplement gummies with Lemme.
And let’s not forget the woman who started it all, Kris Jenner. The mom and manager of the sisters has become known for her fashionable ‘Mom-ager’ power suits. And while she may not have a fashion line of her own, she manages them all!
