Blondie, a rare albino porcupine at the London Zoo, snuggles with her darker sister Nancy.
The Tropiquarium Zoo in Servion, Switzerland, announced on June 2 2022 that they welcomed two baby giant Galapagos tortoises, one of whom looks like its parents, and the other startlingly white. "Incredible birth in the Tropiquarium! We had the surprise of a baby albino among our baby Galapagos giant tortoises, a phenomenon that had never been seen in zoos or in the wild," the zoo said on social media, alongside photos of the rare tortoise.
Animals that are completely white as a result of albinism or leucism—partial loss of pigmentation—are very rare, especially in the wild. Because of their white color, albino animals have a lower chance to survive in nature, so they are more commonly found in captivity. These wonderful creatures show that beauty is found everywhere, regardless of color—or lack thereof.
