NFL wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made headlines in November 2022 after news broke that he was removed from a plane by police before takeoff at Miami International Airport. Flight officials said he failed to respond to requests to buckle his seatbelt and appeared to be unconscious. "Fearing that Mr. Beckham was seriously ill, and that his condition would worsen through the expected 5 hour flight, (flight crew members) called for police and fire rescue," Miami Dade Police Officer Luis Sierra said in a statement following the incident on the morning of November 27, which added, "As they tried to wake (Beckham) to fasten his seat belt, he appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness." At the time, Beckham's attorney insisted his client was actually just asleep and that the whole situation was blown out of proportion.
Track star Sha'Carri Richardson took to social media to share her experience of being removed from an American Airlines flight in January 2023. The young sprinter had recorded her dispute with a flight attendant who she claimed was harassing her.
Singer and former glamour model Samantha Fox was recently removed from a British Airways flight before takeoff. The 56-year-old pop star had boarded the flight to Munich in London, but allegedly got into a dispute with another passenger. The plane was forced to return from the runway to the boarding gate where Fox was arrested. Police shared that they had arrested a woman in her 50s “on suspicion of being drunk on board an aircraft.” Her fellow passengers had to deboard the plane and spend a night in a hotel due to the delay caused by the incident. Fox reportedly spent one night in jail.
Two months later, bodycam footage from the police officers involved showed a confused-looking Beckham talking to police officers, who deemed him fit to fly, but flight attendants stepped in to say, "Do you know how many times we’ve shaken him to put the seatbelt on?" According to staff, Beckham was completely unresponsive to vigorous attempts to wake him. They also told the officers that he said he had been clubbing the night before. "This is a five-hour flight, he shouldn’t be going with us like that," one attendant added. Eventually, the plane's captain got involved and it was decided that Beckham was not in a condition to fly. Beckham became frustrated and refused to leave the plane, which resulted in the entire flight having to deboard so police officers could deal with the situation and escort Beckham from the plane. He eventually complied.
