On December 17, the 'Top Gun' star was honored with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award, which is considered the highest naval honor that a person outside of the Navy can receive.

He received the award at a ceremony in London that was held to honor his contribution to the US Navy through his film work. The Navy has released a statement saying that the original 'Top Gun' (1986) movie provoked a huge surge in Navy pilot recruitment.
