▲As far as costumes go, the race in Washington offers a lot of variety.
▲One of many fun photos taken at the annual High Heel Race in Washington, D.C.
▲

High heel or stiletto races are held around the world, often for a good cause and more likely than not by women (and their allies). But on other occasions, the purpose is just plain old fun and the fellas make up most of the participants. And that's with or without going full drag.

The most famous of these races would be Washington, D.C.'s High Heel Race, held in October, and Madrid's own race held during Pride festivities in the Chueca neighborhood.

But as you'll see in this gallery, several countries have held similar events, this being a tradition that goes back decades. Click on!

▲The high heel race in Madrid's Chueca neighborhood famously offers a cash prize, which has ranged in amounts over the years. In 2019, it was €350 (approximately US$390).
▲Back to Madrid's Chueca neighborhood, where this competitor has managed to hold on to his purse and wig.

You see the white tape around those black heels? Not at all an uncommon sight at these races.

▲Mattresses on the streets of Madrid probably didn't seem that strange on this day.
▲If you're going to race at night, the streets better be lit well. Fortunately, that seems to be the case on this night in Jerusalem.

▲Stretching is important in any sport, just ask this high heel race participant in Monterrey.
▲Lest you forget this is a competition, here's what the podium looks like in Monterrey.
▲This competitor is fixing his wig and running all at the same time, once again in Madrid.
▲Accessories are important too when it comes to these events, as seen here in Madrid.
▲This competitor better hope one or both of his heels don't get caught in one of the many gaps in that manhole cover in Madrid.

▲It's not all glory though. Here a participant is photographed after falling during the race in Madrid.
▲Sarah Palin is no stranger to Washington, but that's not quite her in this photo.
▲A blurry and totally appropriate action shot, snapped in Washington, D.C.
▲Washington is sometimes thought of as quite boring outside the political scene. Not on this night though!
▲Fun fact: the High Heel Race in Washington, D.C. occurs every year on the Tuesday before Halloween.
