In March, Rodrigo Duterte, former president of the Philippines, was arrested in the capital's airport under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant issued for his reported deadly killings during the “war on drugs” period—a brutal anti-drug campaign Duterte launched that resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings from 2016 to 2022.

Charles Blé Goudé is an Ivorian political leader who was put on trial with former President of the Ivory Coast Laurent Gbagbo. He was acquitted of crimes against humanity in 2019.

▲He was indicted on four counts of crimes against humanity in 2011. He was accused of supporting Former President Laurent Gbagbo in systemic attacks against civilians. The alleged attacks would have occured after post-election violence, which kicked off in 2010.

Dyilo was the first person convicted by the ICC. He rose to power with the Union of Congolese Patriots, which he founded and led.

He played an instrumental role in the Ituri conflict, which saw up to 60,000 casualties.

His trial was for the war crime of enlisting and using child soldiers. He served a 14-year prison sentence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was released in 2020.

▲Bemba was indicted by the ICC back in 2008, with two counts of crimes against humanity and four counts of war crimes.
▲Bemba was once a powerful figure, accused of leading the rebel group MLC into the Central African Republic. He is accused of being criminally responsible for crimes against humanity.
▲He has been found guilty by the ICC, and was handed an 18-year conviction. He appealed the verdict and after two years in prison, his conviction was overturned.
▲Ongwen is known as an ex-commander of the Lord's Resistance Army: a guerilla group with past operations in Uganda.
▲Ongwen has been recognized as a military strategist with the LRA. He is being detained by the ICC.
▲He was indicted back in 2005 and finally detained in 2014. In 2021, he was charged with a litany of crimes including torture, murder, and enslavement.
▲Also known as "The Terminator," Ntaganda rose to power as the military chief of a militia group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
▲He was also a member of the Rwandan Patriotic Army, and is accused of working with the Union of Congolese Patriots, a political and militia group.
▲He was wanted by the ICC until he turned himself in back in March 2013. He was convicted of war crimes in 2019 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
▲Also known as Abu Tourab, Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi was a member of the Ansar Dine militia in North Africa.
▲He was indicted in 2015, with one count of war crimes relating to his activity in Mali.
▲He pleaded guilty to launching attacks on religious and historical buildings in Timbuktu. He received a sentence of nine years in prison.
▲According to the ICC's arrest warrant, Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz is a Malian national who acted as the de facto chief of Islamic police in Timbuktu.
▲He stands accused of his role in destroying the mausoleums of Muslim saints, and using Islamic police forces to violate civilians.
▲He has been in custody since 2019 and his trial was concluded in May 2023. He is awaiting the court's verdict.
▲Yekatom was arrested in 2018 for war crimes committed in the Central African Republic. His trial began in 2021 and ended in December 2024. The ICC judges are deliberating before announcing their judgement.
▲Yekatom is alleged to be responsible for both war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as murder, imprisonment, and the use of child soldiers.
▲There are also a number of fugitives who await action from the ICC, one of which is Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.
▲He is a Libyan political figure and the second son of the deceased dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
▲He stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
▲Omar al-Bashir was a fugitive of the ICC for more than 10 years. He was indicted back in 2009, on five counts of crimes against humanity, along with other charges.
▲He was accused of using government policy to persecute civilians while he served as president of Sudan during the Darfur conflict.
▲

In 2020, the Sudanese government handed al-Bashir over to the ICC and his trial is ongoing.

In March 2023, the ICC issued a warrant for the arrest of President Vladimir Putin, accusing the Russian leader of committing multiple war crimes since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

He is specifically charged with "the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation." In response, Russia’s top investigative body opened a criminal case against the ICC, stating that they knowingly accused an innocent person of a crime. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev even threatened to target the court with missile strikes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Netanyahu and Gallant are accused of intentionally depriving Gaza's civilians of essential resources, including food, water, medicine, medical supplies, fuel, and electricity. Al-Masri faces charges for mass killings during the October 7 attacks on Israel, as well as assault and hostage-taking. However, Israel claims to have killed Al-Masri in the conflict. Hamas have not confirmed the death.

Benjamin Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 on charges related to gifts from wealthy friends and for allegedly seeking regulatory favors for media magnates in exchange for favorable coverage.

As his court date approached, Netanyahu brought back his usual pre-war rhetoric aimed at law enforcement, labeling the investigations against him as a witch hunt. He maintains his innocence and has entered a plea of not guilty.
