The youngest popes in history
Many were a lot younger than Leo XIV
©
Getty Images

Pope Leo XIV was elected to the papacy at the age of 69. The new pontiff is just slightly above the average age popes are appointed, which sits at around 62. Yet many are saying he's a young pope. Indeed, we tend to associate the papacy with a senior position, and with someone who's mature enough to head the Catholic Church. But, in fact, there have been many young popes.
In this gallery, you'll get to know the youngest popes ever. Click on to discover them.
