Loneliness can often make us feel like we need somebody with us all the time. However, being in a relationship isn't the solution. Instead, you can learn to be alone without feeling lonely.

▲

The fear of being alone is a classic sign of settling. While it's an understandable fear, it shouldn't be the sole reason you're in a relationship.

▲

Also, if you don't have a sense of happiness and feel nothing when you're around your partner, it's a clear sign you are settling.

▲

Do you prefer spending time with family, friends, or any one else other than your partner, but still won't give up on your relationship? Then you could be settling.

▲

This feeling of unhappiness is letting you know that something just isn't right. So, ask yourself: why are you staying?

▲

In your mind, you see this lasting forever. But that might not be what your partner is thinking.

▲

If you're making the relationship out to be more than it actually is, and your partner shows no signs of wanting to meet you where you're at, then you're settling.

If you find yourself ignoring red flags, it could be a sign that you've settled for a relationship with an incompatible partner.

▲

Sure, relationships have both good and bad days. But if it tends to leave you feeling upset or straight out unhappy, take some time out to figure out why.

▲

But if you enter into a relationship with the hopes that your partner will change in some specific way, then you're not accepting them as they are. And this is settling for less than what and who you want.

▲

Red flags can manifest in many different forms, such as gaslighting. However, they can often be written off as quirks in favor of maintaining a relationship.

▲

If you get into a relationship dictated by the pressure of time, you'll likely be settling for a partner out of convenience rather than mutual understanding.

▲

Anyone in a relationship has ways they wish their partner would change, even if they're minor.

▲

Also, if you continue in a relationship that avoids any intimacy and vulnerability, you'll likely build up resentment over time, which can lead to fights and frustration.

▲

Sometimes, compromise and sacrifice are necessary for a relationship to work. However, it can become too much.

▲

If intimacy and vulnerability isn't possible in the relationship, then you're missing out on the potential of mutual understanding.

▲

Maybe you imagined you'd be married with kids by 30, and now you're 35 and have done neither. Guess what? It's better than settling!

▲

Couples who do this are afraid they'll damage their children if they divorce. Instead, they're unhappy and end up modeling a poor relationship, or their children become sensitive to their sadness and feel emotionally responsible for them, also known as being codependent.

▲

If you're always doing it to the point that it becomes a chronic behavior, then you're definitely settling.

▲

Be curious about what your gut is telling you and what feelings it brings up. It can tell you a lot of things you're choosing to ignore.

▲

Couples counseling can be a useful tool for keeping people together.

▲

Some couples constantly cite kids as a reason to stay together even when they're unhappy. However, this is actually a sign of settling, and it doesn't help anyone, kids included.

▲

Maybe you feel ashamed of the relationship in a way that reflects your honest appraisal of it (or your partner).

▲

Discussing topics other than your relationship when you're around loved ones is natural, but it can be good to reflect on if you're doing so purposely.

▲

We often listen to our hearts in relationships. But what does your gut say about the whole thing?

▲

You're basically settling for less than who or what you really want, and this can result in a miserable relationship.

▲

Accepting flaws and differences goes both ways. If you feel like you're playing a fictional character in your relationship to avoid a breakup, then that's a major red flag.

▲

If your choice in a partner is driven by fear, then it isn't a relationship based on mutual understanding and trust.

▲

In a healthy relationship, you should be able to be your authentic self, and be accepted and loved for who you really are.

▲

But it can also reveal that you should be apart, and that you're actually settling
