With our increased global connection, and the added pressures of climate change, each new catastrophe is felt more closely throughout the world, and the consequent deaths, illnesses, and devastation are impossible to ignore.
The start of 2023 has seen the American Midwest ravaged by tornados. Yet another community was devastated on the night of April 19, leaving three dead and many homes destroyed. The town of Cole, located just south of Oklahoma City, was struck by a dangerous tornado on Wednesday night, with peak winds registered at 155 mph (250 kph). The rural community of around 600 people was warned to shelter from the storm, but lives were still lost and police were called to rescue many residents who were trapped in shelters that had collapsed. Photos from Cole show countless homes reduced to rubble, living rooms exposed to the elements after roofs and ceilings had been torn down by the winds. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt declared a state of emergency if five counties after surveying the damage in Cole.
