A powerful quake struck southern Chile early morning on May 2, with the National Seismological Center reporting a magnitude of 7.5. The seismic event occurred at 8:58 am, approximately 131 miles (212 km) south of Puerto Williams in the Magallanes Region.

Chile’s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) issued a tsunami alert, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of coastal areas in Magallanes and advise caution along beaches in the Chilean Antarctic Territory. This is a developing story.
