President Donald Trump announced that he plans on hitting movies made outside of the US with 100% tariffs. He formally authorized the US Department of Commerce and Trade Representative to initiate the process of imposing the levy.

Some of the reasons Trump cited for his decision were a belief that the US movie industry was dying "a very fast death," and that other countries that attract studios to film abroad pose a "National Security threat."

"It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!..WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!" Trump posted on Truth Social.

It is still unclear how the tariffs would apply in practice, specifically whether the policy would affect American production companies filming abroad or streaming services like Netflix that operate internationally.

Indeed, this decision is bound to affect big production companies and movie buffs alike. It is a fact that many Americans do enjoy watching foreign films. But what is it about international cinema that fascinates and appeals to US audiences, creating such a high demand for the global market?
