In the seven months since the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas and Israel's invasion of Gaza, more than 30,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed. As Israel bombards the small territory with shelling and ground operations, the population of 2 million civilians has been told to relocate time and time again. Moving continuously south, from town to town, 1.4 million refugees eventually ended up living in deplorable conditions in Rafah—the southernmost town in the Gaza Strip and the location of the only border crossing through which Israel allowed minimal amounts of humanitarian aid to pass. In a devastating turn of events, the Israeli military entered Rafah on May 6 and took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border. This means that food, water, fuel, and medical supplies, which were already desperately insufficient, can no longer pass through this border crossing. What's more, the severely injured who need to leave Rafah for essential medical treatment are stuck in hospitals that have only one day's worth of fuel left to keep functioning.

Israel's defense minister, Yoav Gallant, declared that their operation wouldn't cease until they had wiped out Hamas entirely or freed all of the hostages. He claimed that there are four remaining Hamas brigades in Gaza. A government spokesperson revealed that this is only the first stage in a wider plan to take out Hamas involving the entire Gaza Strip. The invasion was launched just hours after Hamas leaders announced they were willing to accept the terms of a new ceasefire agreement that had been carefully negotiated by third parties. This would have been the first pause in the fighting since the one and only ceasefire that took place in November 2023. International powers, including the US, repeatedly warned Israel from invading Rafah, where almost  75% of the Gaza Strip's population was sheltering having already been displaced. Aid agencies are predicting a “humanitarian catastrophe."

Sadly, this current conflict represents yet another tragic episode in the long and bitter feud between Arabs and Israelis. But what are the origins of this seemingly endless hostility that's killed thousands of people and displaced millions?
