The Netflix Original series 'Everything Sucks!' is a drama-comedy that is filled with 90s style nostalgia and throwback references. However, its themes and representation are born out of modernity. Set at a high school in Oregon, the series follows a love story that isn't your typical teen romance.
Peyton Kennedy, who plays Kate Messner, explained to Buzzfeed News that, “the entire show defies stereotypes.” Centering around two teen girls in a lesbian relationship, 'Everything Sucks!' tackles experiences that Kennedy herself has never seen told. “There’s so little representation in regular mainstream media that it’s incredible to be able to convey so much in one show," she said.
After having positive reception from online audiences, Kennedy believes, "for the teens who are watching it who identify with these characters, they will be able to feel comfort and hopefully acceptance at the end of the show."
'Everything Sucks!' is currently available on Netflix.
