In the past decade, the global refugee population has more than doubled to 36.4 million people. But a common misunderstanding is where they flee. The reality is that people affected by the world's largest refugee crises often aren't able to make it to high-income countries in Europe or North America. Instead, they take shelter in neighboring countries. However, the escalation of the war in Ukraine has changed things a bit.

The UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has recently released new data, highlighting worsening human tragedies and the growing need for humanitarian aid. Currently, there are over 122 million forcibly displaced people, including refugees, asylum seekers, stateless individuals, and internally displaced persons. These people suffer from escalating conflicts, human rights violations, persecution, and climate change, causing crises in regions like Mozambique, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and Myanmar.

The White House, however, issued an executive order on February 3 freezing foreign aid from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for 90 days, which

will also impact UNHCR, as the United States is one of the main humanitarian aid donors.
