The Cannes Film Festival has returned one day earlier than usual. And following a year of scandal in the world of show business, there are a series of new measures to combat misconduct. The festival is working with the French government to provide a hotline to report sexual harassment. The rise of #MeToo and #TimesUp is also reflected in the main competition jury. Among the jury is Lea Seydoux, a French actress who accused Harvey Weinstein of making non-consensual advances. Multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein helped galvanise both the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. The jury also includes Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart.
The sexual harassment helpline isn’t the only new change at Cannes Film Festival. There’s is also a formal ban on taking selfies on the red carpet. Those that do will even be barred from screenings. Also, films having their world premieres will not have press screenings in advance.
