In the final running between Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult, it seems the ‘Twilight’ star will be going from mysterious and secretive vampire to mysterious and secretive Batman. It’s actually kind of perfect.
But according to a new Hollywood Reporter poll, the actors’ screen test had audiences divided.
Americans aged 18-29 prefer Warner Bros.’ choice of Pattinson as the successor to Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader. That being said, Hoult—already known to superhero movie fans for the ‘X-Men’ franchise—is still preferred by older audiences. Many suggest that it’s Pattinson’s ability to play dark characters that made him the better option, while others posit that it’s his younger, and extremely devoted, fan base that pulled rank.
After a long roster of American Batmen, both choices for the new star came from England. Though they received different support from different age groups, the survey found that both actors received 30% total support across all cohorts.
The upcoming Matt Reeves-directed trilogy of Batman films reportedly moves away from a DC universe-wide crossover, and rather focuses on the hero’s own narrative. Though many of the survey participants didn’t know that Pattinson had actually already been announced as the next big-screen Batman, 57% have positive expectations of his performance, and 11% expect it to be excellent.
But what do people think about the other Batmen? While it’s clear the Zack Snyder-directed era starring Affleck had very poor results that bombed at the box office, he’s surprisingly not people’s least favorite!
With that said, let's take a look at the best actors who have played Batman over the years, and see who cracked the top five.
