New York rapper Cardi B made history last year. She went to number one with ‘Bodak Yellow’, the first time a female rapper had done this since Lauryn Hill in 1998. The achievement was even more impressive considering B’s self-made background. She rose to fame as a stripper on social media, before becoming a reality TV star, which led to a rapping career. Cardi B will play at Wireless Festival this summer, following a stellar appearance at the Grammy Awards last month.
The New York rapper recently sat down with i-D magazine for a revealing profile. Meeting at a Nandos restaurant, Cardi B talked about her background and accomplishments. “When I got to number one, I didn't even know that no woman has done that since 1998" she told i-D, adding that she "didn't know how important it was for the community of the minorities". B spoke on her role as a minority, saying that "Being a feminist is real simple". She declared that "I can finesse. I can hustle. We have the same freedom. I was in top of the charts. I’m a woman and I did that”. You can catch Cardi at Wireless Festival this summer and read her full interview in i-D.
