Alicia Keys has been tapped to host the 2019 Grammy Awards, and it's safe to say she's a little more than excited about it.
The singer posted a video to her YouTube channel on January 15 documenting her process of becoming host, starting from when she first got the call. Her manager tells her the news and though at first she can't even believe it, she quickly gets up and dances around, yells "YEEEEAH," then stops and says, "Wait, what if I don't want to do it?" She then proceeds to laugh hysterically.
Then, perhaps knowing who would be most proud of her, she calls her mom, who shrieks in celebration with her. Keys then wakes her husband, Swizz Beatz, up with the news. But the best reaction is when she tells her children, and they stare at her in silence, not at all excited, until one asks, "What's the Grammys?"
Keys, who has won 15 Grammy Awards, is still taken aback when she sees all the awards sitting on a table. She ends the video by saying, "I know what it feels like to be on that stage, and I know what it feels like to be proud of the work that you've put in and to be recognized for it, and I just feel grateful that I'm able to bring that light and that energy." Particularly, she emphasizes, for the young women that are nominated.
The singer has previously spoken about the inequality that women face in the music industry, criticizing the lack of equal representation on the Grammy stage.
Being host at the 2019 awards, and replacing James Corden (who has hosted for the past two years), is a step in the right direction for the increasingly controversial award show. What's more, this year's nominations thankfully include a notably larger number of female nominees.
The Grammys will take place on February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
