Yes! You read that right, in the most bizarre news story of the day, it turns out that every single Australian citizen is entitled to their very own, free portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, according to Vice.
All this is made possible under the guise of the “constituents’ request program”, constituents (voters) are eligible to receive certain “nationhood material”. Most of this pertains to assorted Australiana—flags, recordings of the National Anthem, and the like—but it also includes a portrait of Her Majesty. And all you have to do to get one is email your local MP.
We wonder how long this weird and wonderful program will remain open, now that the news is all over town. Fascinatingly, this free portrait initiative is just for Australians. Only Aussies can receive portraits; UK citizens have to buy them and Canadians can only download them.
The portrait in question was specially commissioned for the queen's loyal Australian subjects. The monarch is seen wearing her “wattle spray” brooch, given to her by then-PM Robert Menzies during Elizabeth’s first royal visit to Australia in 1954, and which she has worn to Australian and Commonwealth events in the decades since.
Fans of the queen's husband can also request a portrait of Prince Phillip, however, this particular portrait is not as popular as the Queen Elizabeth II one. No idea why that would be.
Some portrait requesters even received some Aussie flags as an extra sweetener, what's not to love! Get in touch with your local MP before stocks run out!
