Since the announcement of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's engagement, the Duchess of Sussex's family has been at the center of intense media scrutiny.
It was expected that Thomas Markle, who before his retirement worked in television lighting design, would walk Meghan down the aisle. However heart problems prevented him from travelling to the UK for the occasion. He was also criticised for posing in staged photos for paparazzi, something he later apologised for.
In the interview with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Meghan's father revealed that he had only ever spoken to his son-in-law over the phone. He described Prince Harry as "very likeable", as well as, "great", and an "interesting" and "smart" guy. He also said that "my daughter is very intelligent, she knows how to choose who she wants to be with".
In his first phone call with the royal, Markle apparently discussed politics with Prince Harry, telling him to "give Trump a chance". They also talked about Brexit, on which the Duke said he wasn't "one way or the other".
Ultimately he only had praise for the newlywed couple, saying that the prince "loves" and "protects" Meghan, and theirs was a "real love story".
