Bill Cosby
- After serving less than three years in prison for multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court made a shocking decision to toss out Bill Cosby's 2018 conviction and release him, based on the fact that testimony he gave in a different civil case was unfairly used against him. As Cosby was hit with many allegations of sexual assault from several women and only convicted for his actions against one, his release was a huge blow, particularly since his legal drama had been a defining moment of the #MeToo movement.

- Paul Haggis, Oscar-winning director behind the 2004 crime-drama 'Crash', was arrested in Ostuni, Italy on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury, ET reports. An unnamed woman was allegedly left at Papola Casale airport on June 19 and airport security took her to a local hospital where reports say she was allegedly experiencing “precarious physical and psychological conditions.” The woman filed formal charges against Haggis accusing him of forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse over a two-day period. Haggis was in town preparing to teach master classes at the Allora Film Festival that is set to run from June 21-26. Though Haggis's lawyer claimed he is innocent, the festival said in a statement to Variety that "they express full solidarity with the woman involved."

Jacob Hoggard
- On June 5, Jacob Hoggard, former frontman for defunct Canadian pop-rock band Hedley, was convicted of sexual assault, NME reports. A Toronto jury found Hoggard guilty of one count of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an Ottawa woman in 2016. Though he was acquitted of the same charge involving a girl who was 16 at the time of the alleged incident (also 2016) and found not guilty of sexual interference, he faces a new trial for a fourth charge from March 2022—another count of sexual assault causing bodily harm—in August. The allegations first of sexual misconduct by Hoggard, and other members of Hedley, emerged in early 2018, but the trial had been postponed several times due to the pandemic. The band was dropped by their management and record label, and Hoggard has continuously denied engaging in sexual violence. He did, however, share a letter in 2018 apologizing for having "behaved in a way that objectified women."

Jerry Lewis
- Lewis was one of the original legends of comedy, and one of the most sought-after performers of the 1950s and 1960s, although he is best remembered for his musical comedy duo with Dean Martin and his starring role in 'The Nutty Professor' (1963). A 2022 exposé from Vanity Fair has shone a very different light on the man nicknamed 'The King of Comedy.' Many actresses who worked with Lewis in his heyday, like Karen Sharpe and Hope Holiday, came forward and revealed that he was extremely sexually aggressive towards his female co-stars on set. Both women say the late comedian touched them inappropriately and made persistent sexual advances. They allege that he ordered the entire crew to shun them and didn't speak to them again after they rejected him. Trey Songz
- Yet another accusation of sexual misconduct was made against Trey Songz. The singer is being sued for US$20 million by a Jane Doe who says she had a consensual sexual relationship with him before he allegedly turned into a "savage rapist" and sexually assaulted her on March 24, 2016. According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, the woman says the assault happened at a house party in LA, that Trey pinned her down, and that when she managed to escape she ran outside and called an Uber. In the docs, the woman says her Uber driver noticed she was in distress and took her to a hospital, where a sexual assault exam was performed and allegedly revealed "severe an*l tearing that could require surgery." Police were called but she said she didn't name Trey because she was "in shock and fearing for her life." The woman's attorney, Ariel Mitchell, is representing two other women who are also suing Trey for alleged sexual assaults in Miami and New York. A rep for Trey denied the allegations and claimed that Mitchell paid the woman to falsely accuse him.

She alleges that he invited her to a party held on a yacht parked in front of Jay-Z's Miami home in 2020. Brown allegedly gave her a drink, after which she began to feel disorientated and drugged. She says that Brown proceeded to sexually assault her while she was half-conscious, despite her mumbled protests. The next day, she claims that he texted her demanding that she take Plan B. She says that the then-49-year-old Noth flirted with her and later brutally assaulted her when she and a friend visited the pool at his apartment complex. The second accuser says that Noth assaulted her in New York in 2015, when she was 25 and he was 60. She claims that he asked her out for dinner but when she met him at the restaurant he chose, the kitchen was already closed. They stayed for drinks and she went back to his apartment in a state of inebriation. She alleges that the assault happened at his home and it was clear that she was upset and in no state to consent.

- Robin Thicke's song 'Blurred Lines' has already come under fire for its objectification of women and promotion of assault culture, but model Emily Ratajkowski alleges that the singer also groped her while filming the 2013 music video. The Sunday Times reports that in Ratajkowski's upcoming book, 'My Body,' she writes: "Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt the coolness and foreignness of a stranger’s hands cupping my bare breasts from behind. I instinctively moved away, looking back at Robin Thicke." She said the director, Diane Martel, called out from the darkness beyond set. Martel corroborated Ratajkowski's account, according to the report. “I remember the moment that he grabbed her breasts,” the director said. “I screamed in my very aggressive Brooklyn voice, ‘What the f–k are you doing, that’s it!! The shoot is over!!'” Both women say Thicke had been drinking, but he "sheepishly apologized," Martel said, "As if he knew it was wrong without understanding how it might have felt for Emily.” The shoot continued on, however, as Ratajkowski admitted, "I pushed my chin forward and shrugged, avoiding eye contact, feeling the heat of humiliation pump through my body. I didn’t react—not really, not like I should have.” She explained that with that gesture Thicke reminded her, "I didn’t have any real power ... I was nothing more than the hired mannequin.”

Famous figures accused of sexual misconduct
Bill Cosby found guilty of sexually assaulting minor at Playboy mansion
©
Getty Images

The era of #MeToo has brought waves of fresh sexual misconduct allegations against some prominent and powerful figures. It might seem like all of these accusations are new, but the fact is that victims are only just starting to feel more comfortable in sharing their experiences, and these acts of sexual misconduct and abuse have been going on for many, many years. The difference is that, now, people are paying attention.
Disgraced comedian Bill Cosby was found guilty of sexual assault again in a civil trial from yet another accuser. Judy Huth testified that Cosby invited her and a high school friend to a party at the Playboy mansion in 1975, when she was 16 years old, where he forced himself on her in a private room. Cosby's lawyers tried to accuse Huth of fabricating the story, but Huth said she decided to come forward after seeing dozens of other women come forward with similar allegations. Cosby didn't appear in court during the trial but his 2015 video deposition was used, in which he said he did not remember Huth. The jury ruled that Cosby must pay Ms Huth, who is now 64, US$500,000 in damages.
The public is still learning how to deal with figures accused of sexual crimes, but by putting these stories in the spotlight, a discussion can be had about the power structures that enable these patterns, the faults our society has had in the past in dealing with them, and the steps we can take to do better.
