R. Kelly
- The singer was arrested and charged with 10 counts of aggravated assault in February 2019, and was placed in a Chicago jail with various allegations of child pornography and sex trafficking leveled against him. By the end of May 2020, he had 21 charges against him. During the trial, numerous women came forward to detail the horrific sexual, physical, and mental abuse they suffered at his hands over the course of nearly two decades. The testimonies revealed that Kelly essentially led an enterprise of managers, bodyguards, and other employees who recruited women and underage girls for sex.

R. Kelly
- R. Kelly was found guilty of sexually abusing multiple women and children over two decades, in addition to sex trafficking and racketeering. Allegations had been circulating for years by the time he finally stood trial in 2021. He was convicted in September of that year, and on June 29, 2022, a judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison for his crimes. He described Kelly as having an "indifference to human suffering." One survivor named Jovante Cunningham said she never thought that she would see justice until that moment. "I stand here very proud of my judicial system, very proud of my fellow survivors, and very pleased with the outcome."

Marilyn Manson
- On February 1, 2021, Evan Rachel Wood dropped a bombshell: “The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson,” she wrote on Instagram. "He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years,” the actress continued. “I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives. I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.”

- Evan Rachel Wood also reposted similar accusations made by four different women who claim that Manson abused them. In the past, Wood has spoken to Congress about being sexually abused by an ex-partner in an effort to improve survivor rights and end the backlog of untested sexual assault kits. In 2019, she gave testimony on her sexual assault and "torture” to help create California’s Phoenix Act, which extends the statute of limitations for domestic violence cases from three to five years.

Marilyn Manson
- Manson has denied all allegations, but he was sued a fourth time by a woman called Ashley Morgan Smithline who accused him of sex trafficking and sexual abuse. Smithline states that Manson lured her to the US with the false promise of an acting job in 2010 and proceeded to abuse her for several years. And in January 2023, yet another alleged victim filed a lawsuit against him for sexual assault of a minor. It's the first suit to focus on sex crimes that allegedly took place at the beginning of Manson’s career, and it names his former labels Interscope and Nothing Records as defendants.

Tim Allen
- In her new memoir called 'Love, Pamela,' Pamela Anderson claims that Tim Allen flashed her on the set of 'Home Improvement' in 1991, when she was 23 years old. “On the first day of filming, I walked out of my dressing room, and Tim was in the hallway in his robe. He opened his robe and flashed me quickly—completely naked underneath. He said it was only fair, because he had seen me naked. Now we’re even. I laughed uncomfortably,” reads an excerpt shared by Variety. Allen, who was 37 at the time of the alleged incident, was likely referring to Anderson’s Playboy modeling. But the actor has refuted the incident, telling Variety in a statement: “No, it never happened. I would never do such a thing." Anderson's explosive claim is one of many in her memoir which traces her rise from small-town Vancouver Island girl to international sex symbol.

Ron Jeremy
- The notorious adult film actor Ron Jeremy has been accused of sexual assault many times over the years, but was only charged for the first time in 2020. By 2021, he had been indicted on more than 34 charges involving 21 different women ranging in age from 15 to 51. The sex crimes he was charged with allegedly occurred between 1996 and 2019. His trial was scheduled to begin in May of 2022 but was delayed due to concerns about Jeremy's capacity after he appeared to be incoherent and unable to recognize his own lawyer. On January 17, 2023, a Los Angeles judge declared Jeremy mentally incompetent to stand trial and face the charges. He said that the accused was in a state of "incurable neurocognitive decline." Earlier in January, the Los Angeles Times reported that Jeremy was suffering from "severe dementia." In a statement, his lawyer expressed his regret that Jeremy was not in a fit state to go to trial and clear his name. For the many accusers, it was gravely disappointing to learn that they would not have the chance to see legal action taken against Jeremy.

Danny Masterson
- 'That '70s Show' alum Danny Masterson was accused of sexual assault by force by three different women between 2001-2003 during the #MeToo revelations and was ordered to stand trial by a judge in 2021. After disturbing details were unearthed, the jury was still unable to come to a unanimous decision on all three counts, and a mistrial was declared on November 30. Prosecutors announced on January 10 that they will pursue a second trial as Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller argued that the jury ignored supporting testimony in the case. Two of the women who testified at the trial—identified as Jane Doe 2 and Jane Doe 3—issued a statement saying they were glad that another trial will be held and that "Masterson will not be permitted to simply escape criminal accountability." They added, “Despite suffering years of intimidation and harassment, we are completely committed to participating in the next criminal trial to the extent requested by prosecutors and again testifying about Mr. Masterson’s depraved behavior.”

Steven Tyler
- Aerosmith's Steven Tyler was formally accused of sexual assault, coercion of an abortion, and involuntary infamy over a series of years when he was in his mid-20s. Julia Misley filed the lawsuit in the final week of 2022 under the California Child Victims Act, which allows a "lookback" window for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to file civil cases. “I want this action to expose an industry that protects celebrity offenders, to cleanse and hold accountable an industry that both exploited and allowed me to be exploited for years, along with so many other naïve and vulnerable kids and adults,” Misley said in a statement, as per CNN. In the lawsuit, Misley says she first met Tyler at a concert in 1973 when she was 16 and he 25. He allegedly took her to his hotel room after the show where he “performed various acts of criminal sexual conduct." The lawsuit says Tyler then purchased a plane ticket for Misley to join him at the band's next show where she was allegedly also abused. Then in 1974, the lawsuit claims Tyler convinced Misley’s mother to “sign over the guardianship of her daughter to him," with the promise that he would enrol her in school and support her, though he reportedly did not follow through on those promises and instead continued to assault Misley and give her drugs and alcohol as they traveled around. The suit also claims that Tyler impregnated Misley and coerced her to have an abortion by threatening to cease to support her and send her back to her family. And it doesn't end there, as Tyler reportedly “intentionally publicized the acts he perpetrated” on Misley, like in his 2011 memoir 'Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?' when he wrote about being so in love that he “almost took a teen bride,” whom the book does not identify, and how her parents "signed papers over for me to have custody, so I wouldn’t get arrested if I took her out of state." Misley says in the lawsuit that the publications retraumatized her and her family.

Gavin Newsom, Variety reports. The disgraced Hollywood titan was tried on seven charges in total: two counts of forcible sexual assault, two counts of sexual battery by restraint, two counts of forcible oral copulation, and one count of penetration by a foreign object, though he was only convicted of three. Weinstein, who is already serving a 23-year sentence after being convicted of sexual assault during his first criminal trial in New York in 2020, now faces an additional maximum sentence of 18 to 24 years in prison.

Nick Carter
- A woman named Shannon "Shay" Ruth brought a lawsuit against Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in 2001 when she was 17 years old. Ruth, who has autism and cerebral palsy, says that she attended one of their concerts and waited in line for Carter's autographs. She claims that Carter then took her to the tour bus where he sexually assaulted her and refused to let her leave. Court documents state that he took her virginity and gave her HPV. Carter's legal team has responded with absolute denial that the incident took place, accusing opportunistic lawyers of manipulating Ruth into making a false claim in order to gain a payout from Carter. Ruth is suing for sexual battery and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. The Backstreet Boys Christmas special on ABC was canceled as a result of the allegations and lawsuit.

O Yeong-su
- 'Squid Game' star O Yeong-su was indicted on November 24 in South Korea for allegedly inappropriately touching a woman in 2017. The Golden Globe winner was charged without detention, reports People. The woman originally filed the complaint in December 2021, but the actor denied the accusations, and police closed the case in April 2022 without any charges filed. After prosecution reopened the case at the request of the accuser, the actor reportedly told Korean broadcaster JTBC of the incident, “I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake," and added, "I apologized because they said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it, but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges," according to The Hollywood Reporter. He has since been dropped from a series of public service advertisements in South Korea and a co-starring role in an upcoming stage play in the Korean city of Jeonju.

Kris Wu
- Chinese-Canadian music star and actor Kris Wu was sentenced to 13 years in prison in China for multiple sex charges. The former Exo member was accused of assault in 2021 by a Chinese influencer who says he forced himself on her while she was under the influence of alcohol at age 17. The young woman later claimed he had done the same to many other women, including two minors. Considering China's age of consent is 14, he stood accused of abusing girls of 13 or younger. He was charged with sexually assaulting three women, as well as with "group licentiousness," which is defined as sex involving three or more participants over the age of 16 and carries a jail sentence of up to five years. The trial was held behind closed doors, allegedly to protect the victims' identities given that the accused was one of China's biggest stars. According to the country's state-run media, he has been given a 13-year sentence and will be deported once he has served his time.

Kevin Spacey
- Kevin Spacey's was one of the most dramatic falls from grace during the initial revelations of the #MeToo era, though a jury deemed him not liable of Anthony Rapp's accusations of sexual assault. Rapp had claimed that a drunken Spacey had made forceful sexual advances toward him in 1986, when Rapp was a minor. When Rapp first went public with the accusation in 2017, Spacey offered a public apology stating that he couldn't remember the incident but was sorry if he had behaved inappropriately. Rapp brought a civil suit against Spacey for sexual misconduct in 2020 seeking US$40 million in damages and it finally went to trial in October 2022 where Rapp recounted his claim that an intoxicated Spacey made sexual advances toward him by picking him and carrying him to a bed, laying on top of him, and holding him down. Spacey was 26 at the time of the alleged assault and Rapp was 14. During the trial, it was found that Rapp had given an inaccurate description of Spacey's apartment from 36 years ago, and the judge dismissed one of the charges because he felt it was a duplicate of another charge Rapp had made. On October 20, the jury reached their conclusion and decided that Spacey was not liable. Rapp made a statement following the result stating that he was grateful for the opportunity to tell his story before a jury. “Bringing this lawsuit was always about shining a light, as part of the large movement to stand up against all forms of sexual violence."

Kevin Spacey
- Kevin Spacey will be charged with a further seven sexual offenses, the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service has announced. The new charges, which bring him up to 12 charges in the UK now, include three offenses of indecent assault, three offenses of sexual assault, and one offense of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. All of these seven charges are in relation to one male complainant, and the alleged assaults are said to have occurred from 2001 to 2004. After Broadway performer Anthony Rapp made his bombshell accusations against Spacey in 2017, 14 other accusers came forward to share stories about Spacey. Spacey is also facing five counts of sexual assault against three men in the UK back when he was the artistic director of the Old Vic Theater, to which he has pleaded not guilty. The judge scheduled the trial for June 2023, and agreed that Spacey should be allowed to travel outside of the UK and work until then.

Paul Haggis
- The Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Paul Haggis, best known for his 2004 film 'Million Dollar Baby,' spent three weeks on trial in New York following accusations of sexual abuse. Haleigh Breest brought a civil suit against Haggis, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in 2013 after they met at an event where she was working as a publicist. Haggis's lawyer accused Breest of making a cash grab off the back of the Me Too Movement, but Breest says she decided to speak out in 2017 after seeing Haggis publicly condemn Harvey Weinstein and wanted to hold him accountable for his own actions. After waiting five years for her day in court, Breest told the jury that Haggis had pressured her to go to his apartment where he forced her to perform multiple sex acts against her will. Haggis testified that the encounter did occur but that it was all consensual. The jury ultimately sided with Breest, finding Haggis liable on all counts. He was ordered to pay US$7.5 million in compensation.

Paul Haggis
- Paul Haggis was implicated in another incident in 2022. He was arrested in Ostuni, Italy on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury in June. A 28-year-old British woman was allegedly left at Papola Casale airport on June 19 and airport security took her to a local hospital where reports say she was allegedly experiencing “precarious physical and psychological conditions.” The woman filed formal charges against Haggis accusing him of forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse over a two-day period. Haggis was in town preparing to teach master classes at the Allora Film Festival. Haggis was kept under house arrest for just over two weeks before an Italian judge ruled that there wasn't sufficient evidence to pursue an investigation. The director, who maintained his innocence throughout, was released without charge.

Warren Beatty
- A woman named Kristina Charlotte Hirsch filed a lawsuit against Warren Beatty in early November. She is accusing the 85-year-old actor of coercing her into sex when she was still a minor in 1973. Hirsch alleges that they met on a movie set when she was 14 or 15 years old and that Beatty, who would have been 35 at the time, frequently commented on her looks, called her, and offered to take her out. Hirsch went on several car rides with Beatty and was invited back to the hotel where he was living during the shoot. She says that he offered to help her with her homework and brought up the topic of her losing her virginity several times. According to Hirsch, she was initially "thrilled" by the attention from the famous movie star and believed they were in a romantic relationship. She alleges that he eventually coerced her into sexual activity multiple times, and she is now suing him for the psychological, mental, and emotional distress caused by the sexual abuse.

Win Butler
- Four people have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler. Though the allegations, reported by Pitchfork to include unsolicited sexual text messages and photos as well as forceful touching, have yet to make it to court, North American radio stations have already begun removing the Canadian band's discography from their lineups. In a statement, Butler denied the allegations—which were also said to be with much younger women—and claimed all encounters were consensual and that he never touched a woman against her will, CBC reports. The band's 2022 world tour kicked off on August 30 in Dublin, just a few days after the story broke. The Canadian singer-songwriter Feist served as the opening act for the first show but then announced her decision to drop out of the tour due to the allegations against Butler.

Twigs' accusations also include that LaBeouf knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease, that he shot stray dogs to get into character for his film 'The Tax Collector,' as well as allegations of strangulation and attacks where he grabbed her hard enough to give her bruises. In 2022, the trial date was finally set for April 2023.

Shia LaBeouf
- Shia LaBeouf addressed the disturbing allegations brought against him on Jon Bernthal’s podcast 'Real Ones' in August 2022. He seemed to openly admit to the accusations in the 2020 lawsuit. “I hurt that woman,” LaBeouf said, as per Variety, without mentioning the singer's name. "And in the process of doing that, I hurt many other people, and many other people before that woman. I was a pleasure-seeking, selfish, self-centered, dishonest, inconsiderate, fearful human being.” The actor added, “When I think about what my life has become, and what it is now, like what my purpose is now… I need to be useful. And when I look at this #MeToo environment, there’s not a whole lot of dudes that are taking accountability.” He admitted that he "f—ked up bad," and "hurt a lot of people," and now has "a long list of people that I need to make amends to." In a surprising turn he called his accuser a "saint" who "saved my f—king life," because she "created the avenue for me to experience ego death."

Horatio Sanz
- A woman, identified only as Jane Doe, who is suing former 'Saturday Night Live' star Horatio Sanz for sexual assault asked the court on August 23 to add Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels, and Tracy Morgan as defendants, claiming that they enabled Sanz’s misconduct. Doe alleges that she and her teenaged friends regularly attended 'SNL' after-parties from 2000-2002 where Sanz “groomed” her, kissed her, groped her, and attempted to digitally penetrate her when she was 17. The suit alleges that both Fallon and Sanz would drink with her, and that Fallon had once asked her about her age, to which she replied that she was a junior in high school. The complaint says Michaels had given her advice on pursuing a writing career at one of the parties, and that Morgan had rented out a space for an after-after-party in May 2002, where Sanz allegedly groped her against her will. According to Variety, the original complaint named Sanz and NBCUniversal as defendants and alleged that 18 NBCU employees either knew or should have known of Sanz’ grooming and sexual misconduct, including the three mentioned, as well as many other 'SNL' cast members. NBCUniversal reportedly intends to file a motion to dismiss the amended complaint just as they did in April, arguing that the network was not responsible for Sanz’ off-hours conduct.

Ricky Martin
- At the beginning of July, beloved Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin was served with a restraining order from his own nephew. The 21-year-old claimed that he and Martin had been engaged in a romantic relationship for seven months and that Martin began to follow and harass him when it ended, causing him to fear for his safety. A judge granted the young man a temporary restraining order while the allegations were investigated. Martin was unequivocal in his denial and said that the claims were "not only untrue" but "disgusting." On July 21, both parties appeared in court and his nephew dropped the allegations. The restraining order was lifted and Martin and his husband, Jwan Yosef, celebrated the win in an Instagram post caption "Truth prevails." However, Martin also spoke out about how horrific the experience was. “Thank God these claims were proven to be false, but I’m going to tell you the truth, it has been so painful and devastating for me, for my family for my friends,” he said. “I don’t wish this upon anybody.” He wished the best for his nephew, whom several family members claim has mental health issues.

Vince McMahon
- World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) leader Vince McMahon stepped down from his role in June of 2022 during inquiries into allegations of sexual misconduct. It was found that McMahon has paid out at least US$12 million in hush money over the years to cover up accusations of sexual harassment, assault, and infidelity. One former female wrestler was allegedly coerced into a sexual relationship with him and then fired in 2005 when she refused further advances. She and her lawyer reportedly negotiated a non-disclosure settlement for US$7.5 million in 2018. McMahon allegedly paid US$1 million to a WWE contractor after he sexually harassed her on the job and sent her unsolicited photos. Reports suggest he also paid millions to various employees with whom he had affairs. (McMahon has been married to politician Linda McMahon since 1996.) McMahon stepped down as CEO and Head of Creative at WWE, but is still the organization's majority shareholder.

Bill Cosby
- After serving less than three years in prison for multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court made a shocking decision to toss out Bill Cosby's 2018 conviction and release him. Their ruling was based on the fact that testimony he gave in a different civil case was unfairly used against him. As Cosby was hit with many allegations of sexual assault from several women and only convicted for his actions against one, his release was a huge blow.

- In 2022, Cosby was found guilty of sexual assault again in a civil trial from yet another accuser. Judy Huth testified that Cosby invited her and a high school friend to a party at the Playboy mansion in 1975, when she was 16 years old, where he forced himself on her in a private room. Cosby's lawyers tried to accuse Huth of fabricating the story, but Huth said she decided to come forward after seeing dozens of other women come forward with similar allegations. Cosby didn't appear in court during the trial but his 2015 video deposition was used, in which he said he did not remember Huth. The jury ruled that Cosby must pay Ms. Huth US$500,000 in damages. Alfred Hitchcock
- Dakota Johnson's grandmother is the famed actress Tippi Hedren, who starred in Alfred Hitchcock films including 1963's 'The Birds' and 1964's 'Marnie.' Johnson claims that Hitchcock "ruined [Hedren's] career because she didn't want to sleep with him, and he terrorized her," she continued. "And [he] was never held accountable." Johnson became passionate as she spoke during the live taping of The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast, and she added, "It's completely unacceptable for people in a position of power to wield that power over someone in a weaker position, no matter the industry." Hedren herself wrote in her 2016 memoir 'Tippi' that she was sexually abused by the late filmmaker, including instances where he asked her to touch him, threw himself on top of her, and even had his driver go by her house numerous times. She wrote that she never told anyone because "sexual harassment and stalking were terms that didn't exist" at the time.

Robin Thicke
- Robin Thicke's song 'Blurred Lines' had already come under fire for its objectification of women and promotion of assault culture when model Emily Ratajkowski alleged that the singer also groped her while filming the 2013 music video. In Ratajkowski's book, 'My Body,' she writes: "Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt the coolness and foreignness of a stranger’s hands cupping my bare breasts from behind. I instinctively moved away, looking back at Robin Thicke." She said the director, Diane Martel, called out from the darkness beyond set. Martel corroborated Ratajkowski's account, according to the report. “I remember the moment that he grabbed her breasts,” the director said. “I screamed in my very aggressive Brooklyn voice, ‘What the f–k are you doing, that’s it!! The shoot is over!!'” Both women say Thicke had been drinking, but he "sheepishly apologized," Martel said, "As if he knew it was wrong without understanding how it might have felt for Emily.” The shoot continued on, however, as Ratajkowski admitted, "I pushed my chin forward and shrugged, avoiding eye contact, feeling the heat of humiliation pump through my body. I didn’t react—not really, not like I should have.” She explained that with that gesture Thicke reminded her, "I didn’t have any real power ... I was nothing more than the hired mannequin.”

On January 17, 2023, a Los Angeles judge declared Jeremy mentally incompetent to stand trial and face the charges. He said that the accused was in a state of "incurable neurocognitive decline." Earlier in January, the Los Angeles Times reported that Jeremy was suffering from "severe dementia." Steven Tyler

I believe he's very sick and have compassion for him AND his victims." Another of his exes from 2010-2012, makeup artist Karolyn Pho, also accused the actor of abuse, claiming he drunkenly pinned her to a bed and head-butted her.

Famous figures accused of sexual misconduct
Tiger Woods' ex-girlfriend files to nullify NDA, citing sexual assault act

The era of #MeToo has brought waves of fresh sexual misconduct allegations against some prominent and powerful figures. It might seem like all of these accusations are new, but the fact is that victims are only just starting to feel more comfortable in sharing their experiences, and these acts of sexual misconduct and abuse have been going on for many, many years. The difference is that, now, people are paying attention.
Tiger Woods was embroiled in one of the most famous sex scandals in history, and it looks like he might be about to face another. The world-famous golfer and former restaurant owner Erica Herman started dating in 2017 and stayed together for over five years. They seemingly split in 2022, and Herman is now bringing a lawsuit against Woods for using "trickery" to kick her out of their shared home. The Florida home is owned by Woods, but Herman states they had an oral tenancy agreement that allowed her to stay there for several more years.
In a separate court filing, Herman has requested to nullify the strict NDA Woods had her sign when they started dating. Her lawyers cited the Speak Out Act as the reason that the NDA should be voided. The Speak Out Act came into effect at the end of 2022 and protects survivors of sexual assault and harassment, particularly in regard to speaking out about assaults that occurred after an NDA was signed. “Because of the aggressive use of the Woods NDA against her by the Defendant (Woods) and the trust under his control, the Plaintiff (Herman) is unsure whether she may disclose, among other things, facts giving rise to various legal claims she believes she has,” read the court documents.
Herman has yet to make any public allegations of sexual assault or harassment against Woods, but says that the nullification of the NDA will clear a few things up.
The public is still learning how to deal with figures accused of sexual crimes and those who protect them, but by putting these stories in the spotlight, a discussion can be had about the power structures that enable these patterns, the faults our society has had in the past in dealing with them, and the steps we can take to do better.
