Prince William and Kate Middleton are trying to make the best of their Caribbean tour to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, which got off to a rocky start and continues to face backlash. The pair danced up a storm on Day 2 of their trip at a traditional Garifuna festival in Hopkins, a coastal village in eastern Belize. Local organizer Laura Cacho even said “They were shaking their waists like nobody’s business,” Hello! reported.
Their first stop on the tour, to visit a sustainable cacao plantation in Indian Creek called Akte’il Ha, was canceled after an indigenous group in Belize protested the Duke and Duchess’ arrival. Village elders reportedly said they had not been consulted about the couple’s helicopter landing in a soccer field in their village. Now, their next stop in Jamaica has been protested by 100 local leaders, including professors and politicians, who published a letter ahead of the couple's visit which read, "We see no reason to celebrate 70 years of the ascension of your grandmother to the British throne because her leadership, and that of her predecessors, have perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind." Many are demanding an apology and slavery reparations from the Royals, CTV reports.
It's uncertain if their dancing will be enough to prevent Caribbean Commonwealth countries from following the example of Barbados, which voted to sever its ties to the British monarchy in 2020, but it's a nice distraction anyway.
It's not often that the Royals are seen letting loose and getting in the groove, but it does happen from time to time. Here's the photo evidence to prove it! Check out the following snaps of the Royals shimmying their stuff.
